Gesture Tek

It was a fun tour to Gesture Tek and see how does the company integrate motion capture technology into advertising and entertaining aspect of usage. With the camera and projectors, users can interact with the 3D virtual environment with their own avatar. Or by tracing the motion using infrared strips beam, it catch users’ touch and have interaction. The IMM class had a really great time there trying and playing with these machines.

Gesture Tek has been developed since 1986, started from a small company until today as one of the leader in gesture capture technology. They provided interactive applications in a wide range of display, for example, advertising, kiosks, digital signs, games and other interactive computing solutions”.

Since I had been working on the client project for Microsoft surface application, I was very curious about what the difference between their gesture recognition table and Microsoft surface. Based on my experience of playing with Microsoft surface, I found it not very sensitive of touches or motion. On the other hand, the table in Gesture Tek functioned better and it was easier to use.

For me it was a special experince since I didn’t have much chance experimenting with motion capture application before. This might be helpful for our future career as seeing how can we apply interactivity to various application in different ways.

Wayne McPhail

Wayne McPhail came to class and gave us a speech about the revolution of technology and lead us to think about innovation in our society. Wayne is from w8nc, which is a Canadian company focusing on emerging technologies. He’s been working for the print and online content for more than 20 years. He used to work at Southam Inc’s info lab with our professor Dan Zen, Interactive Multimedia of Sheridan College. Few points Qayne McPhail made during the speech were very intriguing and made me reconsider my position as being part of the online world.

Wayne discussed the issue about bubble as saying people like us, who is highly exposed to technology, has ever think about the information gap between us and those countries that are still struggling with the basic need, such as food and water. I admit that technology and internet has changed the way I live, I worked and even the way I think. In Taiwan, as we have a considerably high mobile phone and wide-band networking penetration rate, I started to use computer since I was 11 years old, and I really get used to rely on computer and internet to do a lot of things. Back to the point of does technology broaden the gap between developed countries and developing countries, I think the answer is yes as internet make the world flat without boundary, and internet do help people gain knowledge way faster and easier than before. Those people who don’t have access to the technology is like being kept outside of the boundary. To think of our role in the online world, there must be something we can do to arose the awareness of people.

The other issue is about innovation. Wayne spent some time showing us the pictures which demonstrated the development of computer over the past 40 years. It was shocking to see how small the computer memory was compared to its’ huge size. Technology is improving at the speed of every 2 years, it provides infinite possibility of the online world. Innovation in technology is something I’m very interested in and what make me alive and exciting, think about being a labour of fast-changed technology is a torture. As I’m going to immerse into the industry, this speech would be helpful to keep in mind, not just to do something cool and creative, but something meaningful.

Spatial View

3D view display is an emerging technique,  a great number of movies, advertisement and sport events have being shot in 3D.  Today we had a speaker from Spatial View Inc., he introduced this new 3D viewing experience to us.  Spatial View Inc.is a pioneer in 3D image processing and autostereoscopic display. Autostereoscopic display provides 3D view without wearing any glasses or headgears, developers can make two different types of autostereoscopic display: a two-view display for single viewer, or a multi-view display for multi viewers.

Spatial View is also dedicating in building 3D views on mobile devices. Product include 3DeeShell, a protective iPhone case equipped with a special 3D viewing lens, as well as a software development kit (SDK). 3DeeShell let users create their own 3D contents.

3Dee!oader is a 3D viewing combines with flickr photo management tool. It convert the photo you choose and convert them into anaglyph, watching the image with special custs. 3DeeCamera is an application for iPhone, it lets users to choose photos from iPhone’s built-in camera or the image library. I’m expecting to see weather 3D images will take over from 2D images. The speak also

mentioned that this application also provides plug-ins for Flash, After Effect, 3D Max and Maya. Designers can create 3D scenes easier.

On the display monitor, the speaker shows spatial images that can be seen by naked eyes in any angle, height and distance.imagine one day those 2D images are all taken over by 3D, I think I might probably got confused to distinguish the virtual world and the reality. But the world should be more appealing by discovering things in different perspectives. I’m expecting to see the 3D view being widely used in different field of our life, such as medical, science or entertainment.

Mobile techonogy from my view

The way technology affects human behavior is quite amazing, they change the way we learn, build up social network and entertain. For example, nowadays I use written text to communicate with my friends more often than real talking, and I believe it is a common way for many people, because the development of mobile technology allows us to contact with more people in the same time and its way more efficient. By seeing the revolution of desktop and cell phone, some interesting thought have came to my mind. Due to market demand, desktop has become smaller and smaller while the cell phone has been built larger and larger. What an interesting thing! For me, this scenario reflects that people desire a mobile life!

It’s easy to tell from the movement of several internet giant that the mobile life is coming: Apple launched iPhone while Google launched Gphone which is also the Android. Since that Google emphasis on the idea of opening the door for the development and acceptance of web application, we will be expecting a booming time for the integration of various technology. Recently I read an article from FireceMobileContent , who awards the top 10 mobile application for 2007, some of them are quite innovative, and do help people live more conveniently. Such as 3jam SMS 2.0, which provide group text messaging service, and Sprint/Microsoft’s Live Search.

It seems to be an exciting time for human beings to start the exploration, however, it also cause the problem of information anxiety and management. During the lecture of James Eberhardt, he talked about the application of QR code, which is a new way to store information. Unlike traditional barcode which can store only the basic product information, QR code stores whole bunch of information with its URL. I believe it will bring out another revolution! The rough idea of how QR code works is going through this process: capture the QR code by scanner – process the information through reader – information shows up though decoder. People can store and search for the information anytime in everywhere just using their mobile phone, and people like me will never need to take note and then spend a lot of time trying to find where the note is. Beyond this function, James also mentioned about one application which I thought quite interesting that is to use code as commercial tracking tool.

I’m excited to see the technology revolution, because they make the world more connected and interactive. No matter people like those technology or not, they do bring us innovative perspective toward life and the way we approach to the world! How life will be in next 50 years? There might be a lot of things waiting for us to explore!
